Abstract
These Standards shall apply to all sewage systems designed for use or application and constructed in the Cook Islands. These applicable standards for the design and construction of all sewage systems must be in compliance with the other relevant standards and the provisions of the Public Health (Sewage and Wastewater Treatment and Disposal) Regulations 2014. These Standards include provisions on the specifications for the design and construction of sewage systems; requirements in lagoon protection zones and critical protection zones; required septic tank capacities; occupancy and wastewater allowances; standards for drain laying; treatment unit categories and effluent quality standards; alternative wastewater management systems; applications for sewage construction permits; classification of buildings; positioning of the land application system for every sewage system; setback requirements; soil classification; design specification of land applicable system; and offences and penalties.

Entry into force notes
Subject to Regulation 2 of the Public Health (Sewage and Wastewater Treatment and Disposal) Regulations 2014, the Design and Construction Standards have immediate effect.
Notes
These Design and Construction Standards have been approved under section 16 of the Ministry of Health Act 2013, and apply to all sewage systems designed for use in the Cook Islands.
