Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly.

This Law is enacted in accordance with the Constitution, aiming to protect the lawful rights and interests of the elderly, develop the undertakings related to the elderly, and promote the Chinese people's virtues of respecting, providing for and helping the elderly. The Law consists of 9 Chapters: General Provisions; Maintenance and Support by Families; Social Security; Social Services; Social Preferential Treatment; Livable Environment; Participation in Social Development; Legal Liability; Supplementary Provisions.
The State guarantees the basic life of the elderly through the basic endowment insurance system. he State shall provide basic living, medical treatment, housing or other assistance to the elderly with economic difficulties. The government shall provide subsidies to the elderly who enjoy the minimum living security and the elderly of low-income families who need to participate in the new rural cooperative medical care and the basic medical insurance for urban residents. In rural areas, part of the land, mountain forest, water surface and tidal flat collectively-owned that are not contracted may be used as endowment bases, and the income may be used for the elderly.
