Decree no. 283 of 2023 on Water Pollution Control (Code of Good Agricultural Practice for the Protection of Waters from Nitrate Pollution of Agricultural Origin).

This Decree, made under article 7 (2) (e) of the Water Pollution Control Law, concerns the application of the Code of Good Agricultural Practice for the Protection of Waters from Nitrate Pollution of Agricultural Origin, in order to provide farmers and breeders with the best possible guidance to protect soil, waters and the environment. The Code of Good Agricultural Practice concerns agricultural and livestock activities associated with nitrogen pollution, the degradation of the quality of underground and surface water and soil, the increase in salinity of aquifers; it includes instructions for the correct management and use of nitrogenous fertilisers, the proper use of reclaimed water and sludge from urban processing wastewater, the correct storage and disposal of the produced livestock waste, and the carrying out the necessary chemical analyses.
The Code focuses on: management of nitrogen fertilisers, storage and transport of mineral fertilisers; restriction on the use of fertilisers; water and soil quality analyses; management and disposal of animal feed waste, livestock waste and decomposition residues; general principles concerning use of treated urban sewage; irrigation systems, irrigation of industrial or medicinal crops, irrigation of tree crops and vegetables, use of treated water for livestock; use of municipal waste sludge in agriculture, conditions for the use, sludge disposal, restrictions and limitations on the use of sludge.
