Abstract
This Law provides for establishing the Commissioner for Gender Equality, in order to: strengthen and ensure equal rights for women and men, boys and girls; provide equal access and distribution of resources between women and men; offer equal empowerment, responsibilities and equal opportunities for access and participation in all areas of public and private life. The Law defines the mission of the Commissioner as: the promotion of gender equality through the coordination of strategic plans and the formulation of proposals and recommendations to promote adequate legislation; the monitoring of the implementation of policies related to gender equality. The Commissioner exercises its powers through the following instruments: collecting data and conducting studies and research on issues related to gender equality; designing and promoting training programs for the training of officials of the public sector; ensuring institutional cooperation with ministries and non-governmental organisations. The Law empowers each Minister to appoint an equality officer, with responsibility for the promotion of gender equality in the development and policy programmes of the Ministry. Further matters covered by this Law include: establishment of an advisory body called National Mechanism for Women's Rights, and of its budget; appointment of Commissioner and office of Commissioner.
