Abstract
This Law moving from the consideration that protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding is a public health priority in the European Union, aims at raising awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and the need to ensure easily accessible spaces to facilitate and promote breastfeeding. The Minister of Health, as competent authority, promotes and protects breastfeeding by: determining adequate information, training and communication actions with new parents and the public; the development of education programs; the creation of breastfeeding support groups, as well as breastfeeding in public places; the training of health professionals on breastfeeding; promoting the implementation of the Baby Friendly Hospitals Initiative of the World Health Organisation. The Law establishes a national committee for the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding, defines its composition, the responsibilities of its members, the duties of its members, including: submitting proposals to the competent authority, developing a National Action Plan for the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding and monitoring its implementation, ensuring cooperation between the agencies involved, making recommendations to the competent authority for the establishment of development procedures, as well as the supervision of the implementation of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.
