Abstract
The purpose of this Act is to establish an overall strategic framework for national climate policy in order to move to a low-carbon society by 2050 and based on renewable energy supply and significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. The Act also contributes to transparency on the status, direction and momentum for national climate policy. In order to promote academic basis for decisions on national climate policies, the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building appoints a Climate Council (consisting of 1 chairman and 6 members) as an independent advisory body of experts and which has the responsibility of assessing status of Denmark's compliance with national climate goals and international climate commitments; analyzing possible transition paths towards a low-carbon society by 2050 and relative measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; developing recommendations on the development of climate policy; and contributing to the public debate. The Climate Council shall involve relevant stakeholders (including business, social and civil society partners) to prepare and research in this sector.
