Abstract
The present Act outlines Denmark’s legal framework for climate action, focusing on emissions reductions, climate governance, and policy implementation. It sets a target to reduce Denmark’s emissions by 70 percent in 2030 compared to 1990, thereby making Denmark's reduction targets legally binding. Climate neutrality should be reach by 2050 at the latest. Furthermore, Denmark aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50-54% by 2025 compared to the 1990 level.
The law mandates that the Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities set progressively ambitious 10-year climate targets every five years, supported by an action plan outlining measures to meet these goals. To ensure accountability, the independent Danish Climate Council provides annual recommendations and evaluates government policies. The minister must submit yearly climate reports and programs to Parliament, assessing progress and proposing corrective measures if targets are not met. The law reinforces Denmark’s role as a global climate leader, ensuring transparency, continuous action, and compliance with scientific advice.
