Abstract
This Regulation sets rules on the addition of iodine to household salt and salt used in bread and ordinary baked goods. It requires that all such salt intended for sale in Denmark contain 20 mg of iodine per kg of salt, except for products lawfully marketed in the EU, EEA, or Turkey, or produced in third countries where iodine addition is mandatory. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Fødevarestyrelsen) may grant exemptions allowing lower iodine content or omission of iodine, with possible conditions. Products meeting the iodine requirement may be voluntarily labeled “Salt is fortified with iodine as required by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.” Violations, including failure to comply with iodine requirements, misuse of labeling, or breaching exemption terms, are punishable by fines, and companies can be held legally responsible. The regulation contains transitional provisions for existing stock marketed before July 2020.
