Abstract
This Regulation requires the addition of iodine to household salt and salt used in bread and ordinary baked goods sold in Denmark. It requires such salt to contain 13 mg of iodine per kg and defines “salt” as both sodium chloride and sodium-reduced salt. The rule does not apply to products legally marketed in the EU, EEA, or countries where iodine addition is mandatory. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Fødevarestyrelsen) may grant exemptions from iodization requirements and impose conditions. Only iodine sources approved under EU Regulation (EC) No. 1925/2006 may be used. Products meeting the standard may be voluntarily labeled “Salt is fortified with iodine as required by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.” Noncompliance—such as failure to iodize, incorrect labeling, or breaching exemption conditions—is punishable by fines, and companies may be held legally responsible. The Regulation replaces a 2000 regulation, with previously labeled products allowed to be sold until stocks were depleted.
