Abstract
The aim of this Act is to control the importation of animals, birds, reptiles and insects and to regulate the treatment and disposal of animals infected or suspected to be infected with a disease. The Act consists of 28 sections, which deal, inter alia, with the following: (a) power of the Minister to declare any part of the State to be infected; (b) declaration of infected place by the Chief Technical Officer; (c) slaughter of diseased animals; (d) compensation by the Minister for animals slaughtered; regulation by the Minister in cases of diseased animals during transit and in other cases; (e) power of the Minister to make Order for the prevention or checking of disease and other purposes; (f) prohibition of importation of birds, reptiles or insects; (g) regulations for the control of the importation of animals; (h) quarantine depots; (i) imported animals to be quarantined; (l) enforcement of the Act; (m) general powers of the inspectors; (n) offences.
