Abstract
This Proclamation provides with respect to matters of public health in Ethiopia including health risks resulting from unsafe and substandard quality of food.
In Particular, the Proclamation applies to, among other things: (a) setting standards in relation to food, medicine, environmental health: (b) the licensing and regulating trans-regional food and medicine production, import, export, distribution, promotion and storage of food and sampling and analysis of food; (c) monitoring and regulating environmental health services; (d) other regulatory activities with respect to trans-regional food, medicine, health and controllable health related services and institutions.
The principal administrative authority for purposes of this Proclamation shall be the Executive Organ, i.e. a body to be established by Regulations of the Council of Ministers to implement food, medicine and healthcare administration and control activities at the federal level.
Matters of food dealt with by this Proclamation include: food safety control; licensing of persons handling food; packaging and labelling; nutritional standards; importation and exportation of food; food irradiation; and quality control on water supplied to the public in bottle or through pipes.
The Proclamation also makes provision with respect to waste handling and disposal and the storage of dangerous chemicals.
