Council Regulation (EC) No. 411/98 on additional animal protection standards applicable to road vehicles used for the carriage of livestock on journeys exceeding eight hours.

Type of law

Where the journey lasts more than eight hours, road vehicles used for the transportation of domestic solipeds and animals of the bovine, ovine, caprine and porcine species within the Community must comply with the additional requirements set out in the Annex to this Regulation. In Annex are set detailed rules for sufficient bedding, equipment to be carried so as to feed animals, adequate ventilation, direct access to the transported animals, provisions for water supply and finally vehicles transporting pigs must according to this Regulation, depending on their capacity, the number of animals transported and the stops planned during the journey, be fitted with one or more water tanks of sufficient capacity so that the animals may drink at will during the journey.
