Abstract
The present Decree, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, implements Directive 2009/54/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the exploitation and marketing of natural mineral waters; as well as Commission Directive 2003/40/EC establishing the list, concentration limits and labelling requirements for the constituents of natural mineral waters and the conditions for using ozone-enriched air for the treatment of natural mineral waters and spring waters. The purpose of the Decree is to ensure the health quality of packaged water and other quality aspects in accordance with food regulations. The Decree also aims to ensure that information about packaged water is truthful and adequate, and that it is not misleading. The condition for water extracted from the ground in Finland to be marketed as natural mineral water is that the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira) recognizes the water as natural mineral water. The Decree contains detailed rules on extraction of and treatment of natural mineral water, extraction and treatment of spring water, packaging of tap water, quality of packaged tap water, and labelling of packaged tap water.
