Abstract
These Regulations introduce specific provisions on the welfare of laying hens in battery cages, calves and pigs, as well as general provisions on other livestock. In doing so, they implement various EC Council Directives and provisions of the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes. They provide detailed requirements for cage height and ventilation systems in the case of battery hens; for minimum floor space in the case of calves and pigs. The use of a sweat box system for keeping pigs is prohibited.
