Fisheries Management Plan of Ghana. A National Policy for the Management of the Marine Fisheries Sector 2015-2019.

The Fisheries Management Plan is a sectoral instrument which aims to ensure the long-term conservation of fish stocks in Ghana, whilst at the same time contributing to improve food and nutritional safety at a national level. The Plan sets out a formal harvest strategy for the fishery sector and provides direction for the formulation of management actions within the context of the Fisheries Act, 2002 and Fisheries Regulations, 2010.
The Plan aims to help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition.
The instrument also aims to make fisheries more productive and sustainable. The following key objectives are established: a) to reduce the excessive pressure on fish stocks; b) to ensure that fish stocks within the marine waters of Ghana are exploited within biologically acceptable levels; c) to ensure that effective fisheries legislation is implemented to protect the nation's fish resources; d) to protect marine habitats and biodiversity; e) to contribute to enhancing export opportunities and strengthening value addition; f) to strengthen participatory decision making in fisheries management (co-management); g) to meet regional and international obligations in fisheries management.
The Plan seeks to reduce poverty through the creation of employment in the fishery sector.
In the field of governance, the guiding principles for the implementation of this Plan are participation, public accountability and transparency.
