Abstract
The Regulations give effect to Council Directive No. 76/895/EEC. They provide that a person shall not put into circulation any fruit or vegetables to which these Regulations apply if it contains the residue of a pesticide specified in the first column of Part II of the Schedule or of a toxic metabolite or breakdown product of such pesticide in a quantity greater than the maximum laid down for that pesticide. Other regulations provide for inspection of documents, inspection and sampling of products, disposal of seized products, tampering with samples, and prescribe offences. These Regulations have been amended also in 1981, 1994 and 1997 in respect of the maximum permitted residue levels of certain pesticides, and to make technical amendments to residue controls in the light of up-to-date scientific knowledge.
