Abstract
This Assam Panchayat Raj Act, 1997 provides for the governance structure of Panchayat Raj Bodies. "Panchayat Raj Bodies" means the Gaon Panchayat at the village level, Anchalik Panchayat at block level and Zilla Parishad at district level.
Functions of Gaon Panchayat shall, among others, include:agriculture and agriculture extension, animal husbandry, diary development and poultry, fisheries, social and farm forestry/minor forest produce, fuel and fodder, khadi, village and cottage industries, rural housing, poverty alleviaiton programme, rural sanitation, drinking water. In the aspect of drinking water, the Gaon Panchayat is in charge of: ( 1) Construction, repairs and maintenance of drinking water wells, tanks and ponds and tube wells. (2) Prevention and control of water pollution. (3) Maintenance of rural water supply scheme. Functions and duties of the Anchalik Panchayat and the Zilla Parishad are also provided in the Act.
