Abstract
This Act regulates the employment and conditions of building and other construction workers and applies to every establishment that employs ten or more workers. Building or other construction work includes irrigation, drainage, embankment and navigation works, flood control works, dams, canals, reservoirs, watercourses etc. The Act requires registration of establishments and also the registration of building workers as beneficiaries for benefits provided under the Act. It provides for constitution of State Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board in every state for carrying out functions as provided by the Act.
The Act requires the employer to ensure in every place where building or other construction work is in progress, effective arrangements to provide a sufficient supply of wholesome drinking water, latrine and urinal accommodation, temporary living accommodation, canteen and other welfare measures as may be prescribed. The Act further provides for inspection, responsibilities of employers, offences and penalties.
