The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (Act No. 1 of 2010).

This Act provides for standards of weights and measures for trade in India. It consists of 57 sections over five chapters: I. Preliminary; II. Standard Weights and Measures; III. Appointment and Powers of Director, Controller and Legal Metrology Officers; IV. Verification and Stamping of Weight or Measure; and V. Offences and Penalties.
Chapter I consists of the short title, extent, commencement and definitions. Chapter II states that every unit of weight or measure shall be in accordance with the metric system based on the international system of units. The base unit of numeration shall be the unit of the international form of Indian numerals. It prohibits usage otherwise than in accordance with the standard unit of weight, measure or numeration. Chapter III provides for appointment of Directors of legal metrology and other employees for exercising the powers and discharging the duties conferred under this Act in relation to inter-State trade and commerce. The powers include entering, searching, inspecting and seizing any weight, measure of other goods, records, registers etc. The Act requires registration for import of weights or measures and prohibits non-standard imports. A licence is required to be obtained to manufacture, repair or sell any weight or measure. Chapter IV provides for verification and stamping of weight or measure. Chapter V contains penalties for offences committed under the Act.
