The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.

These Rules are framed by the central government in exercise of the powers conferred by section 52 of the Legal Metrology Act 2009 to regulate packaging of commodities for wholesale, retail, import and export.
Chapter II of the Rules regulates packages intended for retail sale and requires a label to be affixed with declarations mentioned therein. It further requires certain commodities to be packed in standard quantities as per the Schedule. Declaration as to the name and address of manufacturer, packer and importer should be mentioned on the label. The size, placement and manner of declaration is also laid down by the Rules. The details such as quantity, dimensions, weight must also be contained in the declaration. All wholesalers, retailers and importers are prohibited from selling any commodity where the packaging does not comply with the Act and these Rules. Inspection can be carried out at the manufacturer or packers premises to ensure compliance and appropriate action may be taken. Chapter III contains provisions applicable to wholesale packages. Chapter IV prohibits selling of export packages in India unless the same is repacked as per provisions of Chapter II. Chapter V provides certain exemptions including food items packed by retaurants and farm produce in packages above 50 kgs. Chapter VI requires registration of manufacturers, packers and importers.
