Abstract
The Ministry of Environment and Forests notifies the area up to 2 kilometres from the boundary of the protected area of Purna Wildlife Sanctuary as an Eco-sensitive Zone in order to conserve and protect the protected area from the ecological and environmental point of view by habitat management aimed at improving and preserving the genetic resources of Purna Wildlife Sanctuary, and by the reintroduction and rehabilitation of local species through breeding programmes.
A Zonal Master Plan for the Eco-sensitive Zone shall be prepared by the State Government and shall provide for restoration of denuded areas, conservation of existing water bodies, management of catchment areas, watershed management, groundwater management, soil and moisture conservation, needs of local community, etc.
The Notification provides for requirements for or limitations on the activities that may be carried out in the zone. It prohibits commercial mining, setting of saw mills, setting of industries causing pollution; it allows if in possession of a permit tree felling, establishment of hotels and resorts, change of agriculture systems; and it allows agriculture and horticulture practices by local communities, rain water harvesting, organic farming.
The Notification further provides for the establishment of the Purna Eco-sensitive Zone Monitoring Committee and defines its composition.
