Regulation No. 242/1974 on the prevention of food contamination caused by lead and cadmium in food containers.

This regulation seeks to prevent food contamination from lead and cadmium migrating from food containers, including glazed ceramic or metal containers and plastic containers used for food. It prohibits the manufacture, import, or sale of such containers if testing shows that they release more than 7.0 µg/ml of lead or 0.5 µg/ml of cadmium, using a specified 24-hour acetic acid test method. It also requires recognised laboratory testing, producer identification marks, labelling showing that lead and cadmium content has been tested, notification to local health authorities by manufacturers or sellers, and provides for penalties under legislation on toxic and hazardous substances.
