Abstract
With a view to ensuring the protection of the environment, natural habitats and the preservation of biological diversity, this Regional Act establishes rules governing the setting up as well as the management of protected areas and sites pertaining to the Nature 2000 network, in compliance with the framework laid down in Act No. 394 of 1991. Protected areas are classified into the different categories defined by article 4, including nature reserves, protected landscapes and areas of ecological balance. The Nature 2000 network shall comprise, on the one hand, Special Protection Zones (ZPS) to be defined pursuant to Directive 74/409/EEC, and, on the other hand, sites of Community importance determined in compliance with Directive 92/43/EEC. The experimentation and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) shall be prohibited in protected areas.
