Abstract
This Act makes provision for the development and control of the industry of canning of agricultural produce, i.e. the process of packing in an airtight container by any means involving the application of heat, whether before, during or after the placing of the contents in the container. The Act provides also for the control of growing and processing of fruit for canning purposes. The Act consists of 35 sections divided into 6 Parts.
This Act applies to “scheduled crop”, i.e. fruit and vegetables listed in the Second Schedule to this Act. This Schedule may, subsequently, be amended by the Minister. The Canning Crops Board is established for the purpose of the licensing of growers of scheduled crops cultivated for canning purposes and of canning factories. Further, the Board may fix the price to be paid for any scheduled crop sold for canning purposes and shall carry out various activities for the benefit of growers and the canning industry in general. The constitution of the Board, the regulation and conduct of affairs and business of the Board shall be as provided for in the First Schedule. Obtaining a licence for growing or cultivating any scheduled crop for sale for canning purposes shall be compulsory. The sale of any scheduled crop for canning purposes shall be controlled by the Board. Any structure or building used for the canning of any scheduled crop for the purpose of sale shall be licensed. The Board shall establish the Scheduled Crops Fund, to be used for purposes of development of the industry.
