Abstract
The National Commission for Biological Safety is the national authorized body performing the functions of issuing permits and monitoring activities related to: (a) obtaining, propagation, testing and use in closed systems for various purposes of genetically modified microorganisms, plants and animals using modern methods of biotechnology; (b) deliberate introduction into the environment and release onto the market of genetically modified organisms using modern biotechnology methods, including any living structures capable of reproducing organisms, such as seeds, tubers, cuttings, pollen, spores, etc.; (c) unintentional introduction of genetically modified organisms into the environment; (d) intentional introduction into the environment and placing on the market of processed products containing genetically modified organisms and/or non-living components of living genetically modified organisms in unprocessed or processed form; (e) any type of research on genetically modified organisms, including laboratory, clinical, field, pilot industrial; (f) operations for the deliberate import/export of genetically modified organisms and products derived therefrom; (g) unintentional cross-border movement of genetically modified organisms; and (h) storage, burial, destruction of genetically modified organisms and/or products derived therefrom, disposal of waste resulting from the use of modern biotechnology methods. Activities related to the introduction into the environment and the release on the market, as well as the import/export/transit of purified products, are not covered by this Regulation.
