Abstract
This Regulation is a working tool for authorities responsible for water resources management and environmental protection in assessing the quality of water resources, which involves determining the values of temperature, acidity/alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, chemical and microbiological indicators. It establishes environmental quality requirements for surface water and the procedure for their classification into quality classes. Quality requirements are a set of physicochemical, biological and bacteriological characteristics, expressed in quantitative form, that allow a sample to be included in any category to serve a specific purpose. Environmental quality requirements for surface water with reference to physicochemical, hydrobiological, microbiological, virological and helminthological parameters are established in Appendix No. 1. Classification of surface water with reference to water quality requirements is carried out for the purposes of: (a) supervision of the quality of surface waters to prevent pollution by certain substances considered hazardous to humans and the environment; (b) determining the quality of water in order to establish its quality class and type of use based on monitoring results; (c) development and implementation of hydrographic basin management plans; and (d) identifying waterbodies that do not meet the quality requirements for the assigned type of use.
