Abstract
This Act sets out the legislative framework for the planning and management of development while ensuring at the same time the protection of the environment. It stipulates that it is the duty of every person together with the Government to protect the environment and to assist in the taking of preventive and remedial measures to protect the environment and manage natural resources in a sustainable manner. The Act sets up the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and the Environment and Planning Commission. Further provisions concern the procedures for adopting plans and policies and the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development; the issue of licences and permissions for carrying out certain activities (such as trade in wild fauna and flora, introduction of alien species, in relation to waste management and to genetically modified organisms); offences and related penalties.
