Abstract
The Act lays down detailed provisions aimed at ensuring the safety of food, drugs and drinking water. It is composed of the following five Parts: (I) General provisions; (II) Water; (III) Meat; (IV) Milk and milk products; (V) Penal and other provisions. However, Part II relating to water has been repealed by the Food Safety Act (XIV of 2002). Part III dealing with meat lays down rules governing the licensing of slaughterhouses. No person shall, without the permission of the government veterinary surgeon, slaughter any animal, the flesh of which is intended for sale for human consumption, except in a slaughterhouse (art. 26). Article 29 regards the inspection of animals prior to slaughtering; article 32 regards the inspection and stamping of meat before removal from slaughterhouse. The sale of unstamped meat is prohibited (art. 34).
