Abstract
These Regulations concern the placing on the market of novel foods and novel food ingredients which have not yet been used for human consumption to a significant degree on the European market and which fall within the categories listed in article 2.1. The Regulations shall not apply to food ingredients listed in article 2.3. Article 4.1. defines general safety requirements for novel foods and food ingredients. Novel foods shall not be placed on the market in Malta if not assessed and placed on the market within the European market in accordance with Articles 4,6,7, and 8 of Regulation (EC) No. 258/97, subject to exemptions outlined in articles 5.2. and 5.3.. Article 6.1. concerns labelling of novel foods. Article 9 of the EC Regulation shall apply in case of food or food ingredients which contain or consists of genetically modified organisms (art. 7.1.). Trade in and use of novel foods may be restricted under article 9. (9 articles)
