Abstract
This Act makes provision for the control of ionizing radiation and for this purpose establishes a Radiation Protection Authority, sets up a system of licensing for the handling of radioactive material and regulates the generating, management and disposal of radioactive waste.
The Act consists of 27 sections divided into 4 Parts.
The Radiation Protection Authority, established under section 4, shall principally regulate, control and supervise activities involving radioactive material and promote research. It shall be administered and managed by a Radiation Protection Council and a Chief Radiation Protection Officer. No person shall engage in a practice involving radiation, own a radiation source, or manage and dispose of any radioactive waste, unless he or she holds a licence from the Authority. Appeal against decisions of the Authority in matters of licensing may be had with the Minister. Persons handling radioactive waste shall appoint a Radioactive Waste Management Officer and observe other conditions prescribed by this Act in sections 16 to 18. The Act defines offences and prescribes penalties.
