Abstract
The present Regulation lays down some amendments to Regulation (EC) No. 1406/2002, under which the European Maritime Safety Agency has been established. Firstly, paragraphs 1 and 2 of article 1 shall be replaced by the text laid down in article 1 (1) hereto, so as to widen the tasks entrusted to the Agency. The latter shall ensure not only a high, uniform and effective level of maritime safety, but also maritime security, prevention of pollution and response to pollution by ships within the Community. Furthermore, the Agency shall provide the Member States and the Commission with technical and scientific assistance in the field of accidental or deliberate pollution by ships. Further amendments regard the work programme of the Agency, the participation of third countries, the appointment of the Executive Director.
