Regulation No. 16 on packaging for beer and carbonated soft drinks.
Type of law
Regulation
Abstract
This Regulation of the Government of Greenland sets out detailed rules for environmentally sound beverage packaging and return systems. It defines beer, soft drinks, refillable packaging, and single-use deposit systems. In West Greenland, such drinks may only be sold in refillable packaging meeting specifications in the annex, while in North and East Greenland they may only be sold in single-use packaging under a government-approved deposit system; draught beer for hospitality venues must use kegs in approved return systems. Low-alcohol beer (≤0.5% vol) is exempt, though packaging used for other drinks still requires deposits. Sellers must provide information on packaging, deposit systems, and return rates to the government, which may impose requirements on deposit size, packaging strength, or system design to protect the environment. Exemptions may be granted for supply difficulties or small quantities if return systems are ensured. Municipalities supervise compliance, may ban nonconforming packaging, and violations can lead to fines, with corporate liability also possible.
