Regulation No. 20 on the protection and capture of walrus.
Type of law
Regulation
Abstract
The present regulation of the Government of Greenland establishes strict regulations for the conservation and controlled hunting of walrus. Walruses are generally protected, with complete bans on hunting females with calves and walruses on land, except limited allowances in Qaanaaq. Annual hunting quotas are set by the government based on biological advice, international agreements, and local knowledge, and are distributed through municipalities, which issue licenses to professional hunters. The regulation prescribes specific hunting seasons and areas, requires reporting of all catches, and prohibits the use of certain weapons, vehicles, and methods. Sale and distribution of walrus products are allowed only after official registration, while violations can lead to fines, confiscation, or loss of quotas. The order also allows exceptions for scientific purposes.
