Abstract
This Act sets regulatios on the protection of the environment in Greenland. It applies to wildlife consisting of mammals, birds and other animals as well as to wild plants, including aquatic plants. It does not include fish or clams, shrimps or other invertebrates that live in salt and fresh water. Conservation methods of mammals and birds are specified based on their gender and size where quota, methods and season of allowed catch are specified accordingly. The Act also sets restrictions regarding the catch of other animals and the collection of wild plants. The Government has the power to make decisions on suspension of conservation restrictions as long as cases are agreed by local authorities and institutions. Expropriation may also occur, if required for conservational purposes. Salt lakes and heat sources also fall under the protection of the environment.
Natural objects of botanical, zoological or geological kind of scientific or exhibition purposes, including fossils, strata or layers of ice with embedded driftwood, bone material and meteorites are the property of the Greenlandic society. Animals, plants and micro-organisms that are not naturally wild in Greenland should not be exposed or bred in the wild; the Government may make assessments in regards to permission for restocking and farming in the conservation areas. Acquisition, collection or use of Greenlandic genetic resources, or export thereof is not permitted, unless exceptionally allowed by the Government.
