Regulation No. 22 on the protection and capture of birds.
Type of law
Regulation
Abstract
The present Regulation of the Government of Greenland establishes rules on the protection and capture of birds across Greenland’s land and marine territories. It establishes who may hunt birds or collect eggs—only individuals with valid hunting licenses or under guided hunting arrangements—and specifies which species may be hunted, in which zones, and during which periods. The regulation includes daily quotas, prohibits disturbance near bird colonies and in bird protection areas, and bans the use of certain hunting methods. Egg collection is generally prohibited but allowed under specific conditions and for traditional uses. The regulation also outlines rules for reporting catches, restrictions on trade and export of birds and their products, and penalties for violations.
Key changes in relation to previous regulations include expanded definitions (e.g., addition of manniusiorneq), revised and extended hunting and egg collection periods for certain species and zones, a more detailed zoning structure, and stricter regulations on drone use and aerial disturbance near bird colonies. This new Regulation also enhances rules on the sale and processing of birds, clarifies conditions for both recreational and commercial hunting, and strengthens reporting and enforcement provisions, while providing updated allowances for traditional practices and local governance.
