Abstract
The present regulation of the Government of Greenland sets out rules on the protection and hunting of large whales. It defines which species are covered, establishes that whales are generally protected but allows limited hunting of minke, fin, bowhead, and humpback whales under annual quotas, and regulates licensing, distribution, and use of catches. It details conditions for hunting (such as approved weapons, vessel requirements, and humane killing methods), mandates full use of edible parts, specifies rules for registration, sale, and distribution of whale products, and requires biological sampling. It also covers communal hunting, redistribution of quotas, whalewatching, local bylaws, and scientific exemptions. Trade in whale products for commercial purposes is prohibited under CITES. Violations may lead to fines, confiscation, or reduced quotas.
