Abstract
This Wild Animals Preservation Law [CAP. 151] of Ebonyi State provides a comprehensive legal framework for the protection and management of wild animals, birds, and fish. The Law defines protected species, game birds, trophies, and hunting, granting powers to the Governor and Commissioner to suspend or amend provisions. The Law prohibits hunting, killing, or capturing certain protected animals, especially immature ones or females with young, without special licences. It also restricts possession, sale, or transfer of trophies such as ivory and rhinoceros horns without permits, imposing fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture for violations.
To enforce its provisions, the Law establishes a Chief Warden, wardens, and an advisory committee. It regulates hunting through various licences—resident non-Nigerian, visitor, fortnightly, and bird licences—while prescribing fees, quotas, and conditions. It further bans destructive hunting methods, regulates game reserves, and allows controlled hunting in emergencies.
