Abstract
The Regulation on the Protection of Nordenskiöld Land National Park on Svalbard designates parts of Nordenskiöld Land as a national park to preserve its largely undisturbed Arctic valley and coastal landscapes, ecosystems, and cultural heritage. It protects approximately 1,182 km² of land and 155 km² of marine area, including key habitats for birdlife, rich vegetation, and notable geological features like river deltas and pingos. The regulation prohibits activities that may harm the environment, such as construction, pollution, and motorized travel on unfrozen ground. Access and activities are strictly controlled, with rules on overflights, camping, and vehicle use. Exemptions may be granted for scientific, management, or emergency purposes, provided they do not conflict with the park’s conservation objectives. The Governor of Svalbard manages the area, and violations are subject to legal penalties.
