Abstract
This Regulation implements the Coastal Fisheries and Aquaculture Act 2020 by establishing a comprehensive framework for the management, conservation and sustainable use of coastal fisheries and aquaculture resources in Nauru. It regulates community-based fisheries management, fishing, fish processing and aquaculture licensing, and aquatic product exports, while reserving certain species-related activities to Nauruan citizens. The Regulation introduces measures for the protection of marine ecosystems through restrictions on destructive fishing practices, controls on fishing gear, protection of coral reefs, minimum size limits, catch quotas and prohibitions on harvesting protected species, including sea turtles and giant clams. It further provides enforcement mechanisms, penalties, monitoring and record-keeping requirements, thereby supporting the sustainable management of fisheries resources, biodiversity conservation, food security and livelihoods dependent on coastal and marine resources.
