Decree-Law No. 146/2007 approving the organizational structure of the Port and Maritime Transport Institute.

This Decree-Law approves the organizational structure of the Port and Maritime Transport Institute (IPTM, I.P.) (in Portuguese: Instituto Portuário e dos Transportes Marítimos, I.P.). It fulfils the attributions of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications, under the superintendence and supervision of the respective minister. IPTM, I.P.'s mission is to regulate, supervise and carry out coordination and planning functions in the maritime-port sector and to supervise and regulate the activities carried out in this sector. The duties of the Institute include: advise the government on the definition of national policy for ports, maritime transport, navigability, maritime and port safety; promote, coordinate and monitoring the drafting and revision of the National Maritime-Port Planning, ensuring their coordination with other territorial management instruments; supervise the maritime-port sector; regulate entities operating in the maritime-port sector; manage and develop ports and areas of public maritime and fresh water; promote application and monitor compliance with the legislation relating to the maritime port sector; exercise the sanctioning powers attributed to it by law, etc.
