Decree-Law No. 189/94 defining the regime of the Programme for the Economic Development of the Fisheries Sector (PROPESCA).

This Decree-Law defines the regime of the Programme for the Economic Development of the Fisheries Sector (PROPESCA). The aim of PROPESCA is to guarantee the sustainability of the fisheries sector by strengthening the balance between resources and fishing effort and to ensure the modernization of the sector in order to increase productivity and improve the competitiveness of companies. In order to achieve the objectives, the following support schemes are established: a) Adjustment of fishing effort; b) Renewal and modernization of the fishing fleet; e) Processing and commercialization of fisheries and aquaculture products; d) Promotion of fisheries products; e) Development of aquaculture; j) Professional development; g) Developing fishing harbour infrastructures; h) Modernization of fishing station equipment; 1) Protection of marine areas; J) Prospecting and scientific research.
