Abstract
The purpose of this Act is to protect and promote sustainable use of all species of marine animals and plants other than marine birds (‘marine resources’). The Act aims also at preserving commercial fisheries of Palau. Section 4 places various restrictions on fishing within the fishery zones of the Republic, including prohibition of fishing for certain species outside prescribed seasons, fishing for undersized rock lobster, fishing with specified gear, and in general fishing for specified species. The same section places also restrictions on the trade in specified marine fishes and other aquatic species. The Minister of Resources and Development may make Regulations for the better protection of species mentioned in section 4 from over harvesting or for other purposes of this Act. The Minister shall also regulate a labeling and reporting system for exported fish (sect. 7). Remaining provisions of this Act concern enforcement and prescribe penalties for violating provisions of section 4.
