The special nature reserve "Zasavica" is placed under protection in order to preserve the natural watercourse of Zasavica, as a basic ecological factor, where there are water, swamp, meadow and forest habitats. In the area of the Special Nature Reserve "Zasavica" the survival of many specific and diverse living world is enabled: 218 species of fungi, 655 species of higher plants (extremely endangered species: aldrovanda (Aldrovanda vesiculosa), pine (Hippuris vulgaris), buttercup (Ranunculus lingua), rebratica (Hottonia palustris), more than 250 species of phytoplankton, 190 species of zooplankton, a large number of invertebrates (endemic species of crickets Metrioptera (Zeuneriana) amplipennis, large oak beetle (Cerambyx cerdo), Pilemia tigrina, Pannonian leprechaun) Zerynthia (Zerynthia (polyxena)), 19 species of fish (strictly protected species: umbra (Umbra krameri), golden carp (Carassius carassius), tench (Tinca tinca)), 13 species of amphibians (strictly protected species: endemic of the Peripannonian lowland Danube murmur ( Triturus dobrogicus), red-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), kreketuša (Hyla arborea)), 12 species of reptiles (Bar turtle (Emys orbicularis), smukulja (Coronella austriaca)); 182 birds, including species categorized as SPEC 1, which belong to the group of the most endangered animals on the planet: Aythya nyroca, Phalacrocorax pygmaeus, Crex crex, Aquila heliaca, steppe falcon. On the territory of the Special Nature Reserve "Zasavica", 29 types of habitats have been identified as priority for protection at the national level, with 23 priority NATURA 2000 internationally important habitats, and 25 EMERALD habitats have been selected. The area of the Special Nature Reserve "Zasavica" belongs to a part of ecologically significant area under ordinal no. 18 - "Zasavica". Due to the presence of protected species of national and international importance, as well as for the protection of priority habitat types, the area of the Special Nature Reserve "Zasavica" is an identified area within the international ecological network Emerald (RS0000014), an internationally important area for plants (IPA), international and national significant bird area (RS022IBA), selected butterfly area (PBA 40) and Ramsar site (3RS009)
