Choiseul Province Resource Management Ordinance 1997.

This Ordinance lays down provisions on prohibitions on taking and protection of specific species and resources; the implementation of Customary Land Resource Management Orders; variation or revocation of Resource Order; prohibition of activities having adverse environmental effects, specifically taking live coral; offence to use anchor; logging; harvesting methods for marine resources; offences and penalties; and liability of company officers. This Ordinance supports every customary land owning group to make its own policy statements and plans regarding the use of resources within its land or area. Schedules 1 and 2 of this Ordinance list prohibited and protected marine resources, wildlife resources and forest resources.
The objectives of this Ordinance are, as follows: (i) to protect rare animal and plant species; (ii) to prevent animal and plant species from becoming threatened, endangered, extirpated, or extinct within their natural range within Choiseul Province; (iii) to maintain the natural biodiversity characteristic of the land and water environments of Choiseul Province; (iv) to ensure the sustainable use of the renewable resources of Choiseul Province for the long term well-being of its inhabitants; and (v) to assist in Resource Management Planning on Customary Land by the implementation of Resource Management Orders.
