Abstract
This Ordinance of the Guadalcanal Province regulates fisheries in freshwater, foreshore and marine areas of that province and provides with respect to some matters of wildlife protection. It provides with respect to a wide variety of matters including: research and development of marine resources; definition, verification and recording of customary fishing areas and inter-tribal agreements regarding such areas; marine reserves and protected areas; and fisheries activities. One of the objectives of the Ordinance is to improve the living of customary fishermen. It also seeks to promote hygienic and quality standards of fish products. Customary fishing areas shall not exceed three nautical miles from the low water mark. A declaration of a marine reserve may include protected fish or other marine species. The Ordinance concerns also fishing licences and protection of mangroves.
