Abstract
This Act makes provision for the control of activities involving ionizing radiation and for this purpose establishes the Protection from Radiation Board.
The Board shall, among other things: (a) have responsibility for all matters relating to the use and disposal of irradiating devices or radioactive materials so as to protect public health; (b) advise on policies on the safe use and disposal of irradiating devices or radioactive materials; (c) establish and operate a system to control trade and other dealings in irradiating devices or radioactive materials; (d) establish and maintain a register or registers of importers, exporters, manufacturers, users and operators of devices or materials capable of producing ionizing radiation; (e) carry out, facilitate or promote the carrying out of research; and (f) prepare contingency plans for accidents involving radiation. The Act also provides for the establishment of a Radiation Protection Fund and a register of licences granted under this Act.
