Abstract
This Act, consisting of 49 articles, and divided into eleven sections, provides for the establishment of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority and the definition of its duties and tasks; and applies to every source of ionising radiation. The Act concerns: functions and powers of the Authority, including: regulation, control and supervision of the acquisition, importation, exportation, use, transportation and disposal of radioactive substances, and of devices emitting ionising radiation; establishing a schedule of charges for licensing of activities or practices involving ionising radiation; maintaining a system of control for the export and import of nuclear and other radioactive materials; cooperation with competent governmental or non-governmental bodies in matters concerning protection of public health, environmental protection, security and transportation of dangerous goods; monitoring and supervision for the beneficial and peaceful uses of radioactive substances; ensuring Sierra Leone’s compliance with its obligations under relevant international treaties.
Further matters covered by this Act include: inspection and enforcement activity; special fund of the Authority; appointment of board and staff of the Authority; licensing and related provisions, including licence fees, and duties of licensees; categories of radioactive substances.

An Act to provide for the establishment of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority to exercise regulatory and supervisory control for the beneficial and peaceful uses of radioactive substances and their applications, including licensing, inspection and enforcement throughout Sierra Leone; to provide adequate protection to the public, workers and the environment against the harmful effects of ionising radiation; to provide for Sierra Leone to meet its obligations under relevant international treaties, in particular, the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Agreement between Sierra Leone and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the Application of Safeguards in Connection with the Non-Proliferation Treaty; to provide for the establishment of the Radiation Protection Board as the governing body of the Authority and for other related matters.
