Abstract
This Law establishes new rules regarding the maritime zones of Suriname. It defines the territorial sea (12 nautical miles), contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone (200 nautical miles) and continental shelf and the baselines from which the breath of the maritime zones are measured. The baseline shall be the dividing line between internal waters and the territorial sea. The Law defines rights of the State of Suriname in respect of the maritime zones and provides rules for and introduces restrictions on activities in each zone. Where there may exist an overlap with a maritime zone with another state, Suriname will act in accordance with and negotiate an agreement with the neighbouring state on the basis of international law. Suriname shall carry out its supervisory and protective duty in respect of the zones based on the Fish Stocks Protection Law, the Fisheries Ordinance, the Coast Protection Guard Law and the Marine Navigation Law. The Law consists of 35 articles divided into 10 chapters.
