Abstract
This Act makes provision for the registration and protection of geographical indications i.e. a name, symbol or any other thing which is used for calling or representing a geographical origin and can identify the goods originating from such geographical origin where the quality, reputation or other characteristic of the goods is attributable to the geographical origin.
The Act lays down requirements and procedures for applying for registration of geographical indication.
In addition, the Act provides for the establishment of a Geographical Indication Board and defines its internal organization and its powers and duties.
The Act further provides for: use, amendment, revocation or suspension of registration of geographical indication; protection of geographical indication for specific goods as announced by the Minister; penalties; etc.
