Abstract
This Act provides for an effective mechanism to prevent disasters and to respond to the occurrence of disasters in Tuvalu. It establishes the National Disaster Committee, the National Disaster Management Office and, for each Island, an Island Disaster Committee. It also assigns functions to the Minister responsible to the Cabinet for all disaster-related matters. The Committee shall, among other things, advise the Government and coordinate activities of government and non-government agencies. The Office shall be the executive agency of the Committee. It shall draw up a National Disaster Plan which shall be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. A state of emergency must be declared by the Head of State.
